“Working [here] gives me the experience of working with team members and communicating with them, and lets me live life to the fullest.”

That’s how Ashley High describes the internship she recently completed with our Bank’s Audit Department through a Virginia Commonwealth University program that provides people with intellectual disabilities an opportunity to attend college classes at VCU and gain real-world work experience that will help them find employment in their career fields.

Audit Manager Logan Davis meets with Ashley to discuss her projects for the day ahead.

For the past few months, Ashley has been working on a variety of projects, including one of her favorites around records retention. She’s also changed the dynamic in the department by bringing energy, enthusiasm and 300 percent effort, according to Logan Davis, an Audit manager and Ashley’s supervisor.

Ashley said she loves her internship, describing it as an “environment where people care about people with disabilities like me.”

Encouraging that type of an inclusive environment is important to our Bank and is something all employees play a role in. “From making workplace accommodations and minimizing physical barriers to supporting those who process and do work differently, we value and leverage what makes us diverse so that all employees can bring their full selves to work every day and contribute to our public service mission,” explains Chris Tunstall, assistant vice president in Human Resources.

You can read more about Ashley’s journey in a “Day in the Life” article VCU published recently.

So what’s next for Ashley? That’s perhaps the best part of the story. She will officially join our Talent Acquisition team as an employee in early May. “Who better to show prospective and new employees what it’s like to work here than her,” exclaims Logan.
